"A scientist in his laboratory is not only a technician: he is also a child placed before natural phenomena which impress him like a fairy tale."

-Marie Curie

K12 Science

After re-evaluating the needs and purposes of the science curriculum at home, we gave K12 a try. We "enrolled" both children in Science 5 and started with Water Science/Ecology. I am more impressed with the reading/online materials than the assessment tools... at least in the no-online-teacher form. We know the kids other activities are based on the science areas they love and enjoy. The K12 is to make sure they are well rounded scientists.

Chemistry 101

SCIENCE: Chemistry

This was a really really good IDEA. However the level of preparation on my end, the level of time each week, the level of focus required by the children became simply overwhelming. We may still do a project a semester or perhaps do some work seperately, but there is only one blog entry for now.

We'll be keeping a food chemistry blog all semester. Check back to see how science Alton Brown style is coming along.

Science: Electronics & Physics I

SCIENCE: Jr. Robotics

Ayden was more than anxious to sink his teeth into the group of younger engineering-minds: Junior Robotics. With an emphasis on hands-on-learning, they build and create to learn about electronics, simple machines, laws of physics, and architecture.

The fall semester was a bit slow. Not only did we miss two months due to illness, but the group in general struggled with scheduling due to holidays. Just the common challenges of a homeschool education group, so I am learning.

NTX Lego Robotics

Since both children asked for Lego Mindstorms for Christmas, Santa seems to have no problem helping with the investment in their education. We are just at the front edge of the possible fun and lessons to be learned with these "toys". But I have already personally seen these "magic" blocks and programming tools turn a frustrated child from, "I quit" to "I just have to go try again!" THAT is the best lesson is science!

Biology 101

SCIENCE: Biology

In Spring 2009, the kids traded their playfort for a garden and planted a late-Spring/early-Summer feast of tomatoes, cantelope, sweet peppers, cucumbers, and cilantro.

Through observation, trial-and-error, and the guidance of green-thumb Daddy, they've learned about the basics of water, heat, and sunlight and about the exact conditions necessary to create a cantelope plant that never stops!  See all the photos of the garden.

Science: Electronics & Physics II

SCIENCE: Robotics

Robotics is one of many great programs offered by our homeschool group, SAIL. The SAIL Robotics group is a participant in the CoCoBest Competition. This was SAIL Robotics' third year. They won 2nd overall at the Regional Competition and earned their first ever change to participate in the State Level BEST Competition.

See many photos of both competitions.
